100 Best Places for Autumn Foliage in Japan Best New 100 Roadside Tree Landscapes in Japan

The 2.4 km road running through Makino Pickland is lined with about 500 Metasequoia trees that blend in with the Nosaka mountain range to form a plateau-like landscape on the approach to the Makino Highlands.
Metasequoia, a deciduous tall tree native to China, is known in Japanese as Akebonosugi.
The name "meta" (= deformed) sequoia refers to its resemblance to the sequoia, which can reach heights of up to 115 meters. The road attracts visitors throughout the year, for the buds and fresh green in spring, the deep greens in summer, the distinctive red leaves in autumn and the bare trees and snowflakes in winter. In 1994 it was nominated as one of the Best New 100 Roadside Tree Landscapes in Japan.
