Traditional crafts

A multitude of local industries have taken root in Takashima, which was a key node on land and water transport routes between the capital of Kyoto and the Hokuriku region. Takashima has long been home to artisans and specialty producers, and today boasts a strong contingent of artisans dedicated to keeping traditional Japanese techniques alive.
The Takashima fan bone industry started up about 300 years ago, drawn to the high-quality bamboo growing naturally in the Ado River basin. The industry covers all processes through to completion of the finished product. Takashima fans have been formally designated as traditional crafts of Shiga Prefecture, along with Japanese candles and Unpei brushes.
